Donald R. Gilbert, 69

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Donald Raymond Gilbert, 69, of 108 Berkshire Drive died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Williamstown Commons.

Born in North Adams on Nov. 21, 1943, son of George J. Gilbert and Mary DiLorenzo Gilbert Chalifoux, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Raymond C. Chalifoux. He attended North Adams schools and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1963. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Notre Dame University and later received a bachelor's degree in education from North Adams State College and a master's degree in creative arts from Lesley College.

Mr. Gilbert began his teaching career at Savoy and Clarksburg elementary schools. He was last employed as a teacher at Taconic High School and Reid Middle School in Pittsfield until his retirement in 2005.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a member of the Williamstown Rotary Club. He also was a Red Cross first-aid instructor and emergency medical technician for more than 30 years. Active in Scouting, he was scoutmaster for Troop 20 at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield since 1979. Before that, he was the scoutmaster of Troop 70 at St. John's Church in Williamstown. He also enjoyed camping and woodworking.

He leaves his aunt, Gena Dellaghelfa of Adams, and several cousins including Susan Dellaghelfa of Adams. Mr. Gilbert will be missed by his many friends from Boy Scout Troop 20.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Gilbert will be Wednesday, March 6, at 11 from St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 5, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 20 in care of the funeral home.
