WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Carl Arnold Westerdahl, 75, of Prospect Street died April 3, 2013, at home following a long illness.
Born in Newark, N.J., on October 19, 1937, son of Carl A. Westerdahl Sr. and Elizabeth Houck Westerdahl, he was reared in Gettysburg, Pa., and graduated from Wagner College in 1959.
He served in the Army Reserve from 1961 to 1965.
Mr. Westerdahl had a 34-year career in higher-education administration, holding executive positions at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where he also was dean of students and director of alumni and community relations.
Upon retirement, he co-wrote histories of RPI and of Albany Academy. He also volunteered with the Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, N.Y., established the "College of Opera Knowledge" to enable a wide circle of friends to learn about and enjoy opera and founded a support group, "Wagner '59 and Friends," for his alma mater.
He was an active member of First Congregational Church, of which he was co-moderator, and president of the Williamstown Historical Museum. At various times, he also volunteered with the Clark Art Institute, A Better Chance, Northern Berkshire Community Coalition and Williamstown Chamber of Commerce.
Energetic and enthusiastic, Mr. Westerdahl had many interests, ranging from NASCAR to opera. He enjoyed American history, art, music, sports, sailing, dining and travel, including "blue road" travel to small cities. He celebrated his 75th birthday in 2012 with more than 100 family members and friends.
His first wife, the former Mary Church, died in 2001 and his son Eric Jon Westerdahl in 2008
He leaves his wife, Susan Stetson Clarke; his daughter and son-in-law, Maura K. Westerdahl and Thomas Mattice of Juneau, Alaska; his son, Carl H. Westerdahl and his fiancée, Karen Larson, of Seattle; his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Nancy Westerdahl of Penn Yan, N.Y.; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Mary Westerdahl and her mother, Martha A. Westerdahl, of Williamstown; and his nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service for Mr. Westerdahl will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at First Congregational Church, 906 Main St., followed by a reception at the church.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 9, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montana Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Donations in his memory may be made to the Williamstown Historical Museum, 1095 Main S., Williamstown, MA 01267.
