Daniel E. Galusha, 92
April 14, 2013
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Daniel Eldridge Galusha, 92, of Fairfield Farms, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Williamstown Commons.
Born in Williamstown on March 10, 1921, son of Daniel Jones and Kate M. Eldridge Galusha, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1939 and attended Iowa State College.
He earned his pilot's license to join the Army Air Forces during World War II but because of labor shortages, he returned to run the family farm. He continued to fly his own plane as a hobby.
Mr. Galusha operated Fairfield Farms, started by his father more than 100 years ago, for many years. The farm had a large retail milk business that was sold in the early 1960s. The dairy continued to operate, and he planted crops and grew and sold Christmas trees as a sideline.
He was an ardent conservationist and the farm was considered a model of conservation. Mr. Galusha was chairman the Berkshire Conservation District for more than 40 years and continued as an adviser after retiring. He also served on the board of the Eastern States Farmer's Exchange, which became Agway, and was a member of First Congregational Church.
Aside from working the land on his farm, he was an accomplished woodworker, building everything from his cabin to dollhouses for his granddaughters.
He and his wife, the former Mary Lou DeMayo, were married on Jan. 30, 1949.
Besides his wife of 64 years, he leaves three sons, James Eldridge Galusha and his wife, Jacqueline, John Daniel Galusha and his companion, Jamie Bairstow, and William Louis Galusha and his wife, Kelly, all of Williamstown; five grandchildren, Kathryn, Ryan and Andrew Galusha, Daniel Jay Galusha and Sarah Galusha and her husband, Matt Chinman, and five great-grandchildren, Lauren, James and Cassie Galusha and Luke and Nate Chinman.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Memorial services for Mr. Galusha will be held Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, Williamstown.
At his request, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berkshire Conservation District, 78 Center St., Pittsfield MA, 01201 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 322 8th Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 01001.
