Thomas A. Hart Sr., 93

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Thomas A. Hart Sr., 93, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Williamstown, died Jan. 5, 2013, at the Residences at Thomas Circle in Washington.

Born in Williamstown on Jan. 18, 1919, son of Henry and Kate Lillian Alexander Hart, he attended local schools and graduated from New York University in 1942, later receiving his doctor of education from NYU in 1958. He earned is master's degree in health and physical education from the University of Illinois in 1945. He moved to Washington in 1948.

An Army Air Forces veteran, he served from 1942 to 1946 as a technical sergeant and was in charge of athletics at Chanute Field, Ill.

Mr. Hart retired in 1989 as an executive from Westinghouse Corp., for which he had worked in job training, community service and public relations. He was a professor of health and physical fitness at Howard University from 1948 to 1963. He was head varsity coach at various times of the basketball, track and field, golf and wrestling teams and was inducted into the university's Hall of Fame. He had previously taught at Talladega (Ala.) College for two years.

In 1958, he took his family to Ghana as part of the International Education Exchange Service, under the auspices of the State Department, to train that nation's coaches and develop national men's and women's track and field teams for the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Mr. Hart operated Camp Hart, a summer leadership program for children, at his family's South Williamstown farm from 1948 until 1963.

He served on the boards of the University of the District of Columbia, the YMCA and the International Association of Free Enterprise Trade Zones and was a member of numerous charitable organizations and of the NAACP and Urban League. He worked closely with the Congressional Black Caucus and was a founder and officer of the American Association of Blacks in Energy.

He was a member of both Sargent Memorial and Northminster Presbyterian churches in Washington.

His first wife, the former Adalyne Monroe, died Oct. 13, 1992.

He leaves his wife, the former Gloria Davidson; two daughters, Brenda Hart of Louisville and Elaine Hart Brothers of Durham, N.C.; a son, Thomas A. Hart Jr. of Washington; a stepson, Michael A. Davidson of Jonesboro, Ga.; a brother, James Y. Hart of Williamstown, eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

His siblings Allen W.P. Hart, Margaret A. Hart, Henry Hart Jr. and William F. Hart, predeceased him.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hart will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 11:45 a.m. at Sherman Burbank Chapel in Williamstown. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.

A calling hour will be held from 11 until the time of the service. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.
