Gary A. Stone, 59

July 19, 2013

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Gary A. Stone, 59, formerly of Medford, died Friday, July 19, 2013, in Marlboro after a long period of poor health.

Born Nov. 3, 1953, son of Everett F. and Phyllis Walker Stone, late of Williamstown, he suffered from a severe form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that confined him to a wheelchair his whole life. Given only months to live at birth, he defied the medical experts and led a rich and full life, graduating first from the Massachusetts Hospital School, where he earned the nickname "Mouse," and later from Massachusetts Bay Community College in the late 1970s with a computer science degree.

Mr. Stone was employed as a programmer and information technology administrator for a number of companies in the Boston area, including Houghton-Mifflin and Raytheon.

Those who knew him will recall his love of books, a wide variety of music and movies, and how he frequently shared his latest discoveries with family and friends.

In his younger years, he was an accomplished wheelchair athlete, competing in multiple track and field events including shot put, discus and racing on the international stage, earning numerous medals and trophies in what would later become known as the Paralympics. He was also a bowler and basketball player and lifelong fan of the Boston Celtics. In addition, he leaves a legacy of deep Christian faith and was active in both his church, the Paulist Center of Boston, and the MHS alumni association.

He leaves a brother, Ronald Stone of Brattleboro, Vt.; three sisters, Brenda Carroll of Oxford, Sheree Saunders of Rochester, N.H., and Marilee Swindell of Temple, N.H., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral for Mr. Stone will be Wednesday, July 24, at 11 from Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved parents in Eastlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 23, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Stone's memory to either the Ehlers-Danlos Foundation or the Paulist Center in care of the funeral home.
