Mark Markarian, 98

July 24, 2013

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Mark Markarian, 98, of 1080 Simonds Road died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Williamstown Commons.

Born in Lowell on April 11, 1915, son of Asadoor and Anna Der Hoosigian Markarian, he graduated from Lowell High School in 1932 and from the Lowell Textile Institute, with high honors and as president of his class.

Mr. Markarian was employed with the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams since the early 1940s. As the leader of its laboratory, he developed new manufacturing methods and new products that resulted in 40 U.S. patents, including a successful continuous capacitor aging machine, which Sprague put in production in its North Carolina plant. He retired from Sprague in 1979. He had first worked at the former Arnold Print Works, where he developed wash-resistant paints for improving the flock printing process on cotton and silk.

In his younger years, he enjoyed skiing and fishing the area waters for trout. He also enjoyed bowling.

His wife, the former Anne Marie O'Leary, whom he married in 1936, died on March 21, 2007.

He leaves his son, Paul Markarian and his wife, Louise, of North Adams, who were his primary caregivers; a brother, Haig Markarian of Natick; a grandson, Erik Markarian and his wife, Tara, of Chelmsford, and nieces and nephews.

His son Richard J. Markarian died on Oct. 26, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Markarian will be Monday, July 29, at 11 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
