Avaz Hajizadeh, 65
September 02, 2013
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Professor Avaz Hajizadeh, 65, of Jamieson Heights died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013. He was emeritus professor of business administration and economics at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Born in Iran, he earned his bachelor of science degree from Pahlavi University in Shiraz and emigrated to the United States in 1976 to pursue a career in economics. He earned his master of business degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and his doctorate in economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
Professor Hajizadeh had recently retired from MCLA after 30 years. He had been a member of the MCLA strategic planning task force, was faculty marshal and was part of the working group that helped draft the college's new mission statement that was approved last spring. He also was a member of the MCLA Foundation Board of Directors.
A strong believer in civic participation, he was active with his wife, Parvin Hajizadeh, in a number of local and national campaigns, including for President Barack Obama.
He enjoyed cheering the Mount Greylock Regional High School athletic teams on which his sons played. He was a devoted husband and dedicated father.
He was described as a steadfast father figure for many people both within his immediate family, including his nephews who emigrated here, and the broader community. He was honored at MCLA's opening breakfast on Tuesday as a friend and colleague and, said MCLA President Mary Grant, "someone who made a profound difference in this institution."
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Sahand Hajizadeh of Boston and Alvand Hajizadeh of Albany, N.Y.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours for Mr. Hajizadeh will be Friday, Sept. 6, from 11 to 1 at Flynn and Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Avaz Hajizadeh Scholarship Fund for Overall Excellence in care of MCLA Foundation Inc., 375 Church S., North Adams, 01247.
