WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Elizabeth Hazel Costa St. Hilaire, 91, formerly of North Adams and Williamstown, died on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Ridgewood, N.J.

Born in Concord, Maine, on July 11, 1922, daughter of Philias Caissie and Mary Rose Cormier Casey, she graduated from Monson (Maine) Academy.

Mrs. St. Hilaire established and operated the former Colonial Restaurant. She had first worked after high school in the aviation industry in Brooklyn, N.Y., and later at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams during the early years of her marriage to Nicola Costa. During her later years, after she married Vincent St. Hilaire, she helped to raise and sell vegetables, flowers and crafts at the Williamstown Farmers Market.

She was active in the women's auxiliaries of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the ladies' aid societies in the churches she attended throughout her lifetime. She led a full life that included a passion for Bible study, travel, reading, writing, gardening, family and friends. She was a valued participant at Christian Healthcare Center in Wyckoff, N.J., until a week before she passed, and always prided herself on having learned Hebrew and visited Israel.

Her first husband, Costa, died in 1986.
Her husband, whom she married in 1992, died in 2008.

She leaves two sons, Nicola G. Costa of North Wales, Pa., and David Costa of North Adams; three daughters, Sandra Szczygiel of Prince Edward Island, Canada, Laurie Zacharias of Walnut, Calif., and Michelle Oleski of North Haledon, N.J.; two brothers, Norris Casey of Antioch, Calif., Otis Casey of Dover Plains, N.Y.; a sister, Leah Tracy of Cheshire; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; four stepdaughters, Annette Szpila, Bernadette Snide, Mary Jones and Rita Jowett, and three stepsons, Paul, Keith and Gerard St. Hilaire.

She was predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth Roy; stepchildren Frances St. Hilaire and Theresa Kennedy; sisters Norma Jamros, Lodie Darmstadt, Dora Sheldon and Emily Barnett, and her brother Regis Casey.
