Lawrence J. George, 64

November 24, 2013

DALTON, Mass. — Lawrence Joseph George, 64, of Chapel Hill, N.C., a native of Dalton, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, as the result of an automobile accident in Williamstown.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 18, 1949, a son of Lucille Fischer George of Kinderhook, N.Y., and the late Lawrence Clarence George, he graduated from Wahconah Regional High School and subsequently attended Berkshire Community College for two years before matriculating to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering technology.

Mr. George was employed at the Williams College Science Center as an instrument support and electronics technician at the time of his death. He previously was employed in a similar position in the chemistry department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He was an avid hiker, whitewater kayaker and cyclist. He was also a licensed amateur radio operator with a first class commercial radio-telephone license from the Federal Communications Commission.

Besides his mother, he leaves his wife of 31 years, Patricia Kenney George of Chapel Hill; his son, Joseph Thomas George of Chapel Hill; his sister, Marion MacPherson of Kinderhook; his two brothers, Jonathan George of Shelburne Falls and Douglas George of Deer Park, Wash., and nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Memorial Mass for Mr. George will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown, with a reception to follow. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Massachusetts office of Mothers Against Drunk Driving or the Parish of Sts. Patrick & Raphael Church Building Fund, 54 Southworth St., Williamstown, MA 01267. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

Larry and I worked on a project at Sprague Marshall Street in the 1980s. Last fall, I met him again in Adams as he cycled on the Rail Trail. We reminisced about the project. shocking end for one of the good guys I've known.
