WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Jerome Haywood Norton, 92, of 118 Church St. died Friday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his home.
Born in Northampton on Sept. 9, 1921, a son of Carl and Dorothy Haywood Norton, he graduated from Northampton High School and American International College in Springfield, and received a master's degree in education from Syracuse (N.Y.) University in 1952. He was also a participant in the John Hay Fellowship at Williams College.
He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Norton taught English at the former Williamstown High School, and was head of the English department at Mount Greylock Regional High School until his retirement in 1988.
He leaves his wife, the former Phyllis McNanley, whom he married in 1951; a daughter, Jennifer Jayko and her husband, James, of Williamstown; two sons, Carl J. Norton and his wife, Eileen, of the state of Florida and Jerome D. Norton and his wife, Kathleen, of South Hadley, and two grandchildren, Lila and Danielle Norton.
His son Christopher H. Norton died in 2004.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial Mass for Mr. Norton will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the David & Joyce Milne Public Library through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals.

Mr. Norton was my English teacher when I attended the old Williamstown High School. He was a great teacher who, with his patience and understanding, had a wonderful way with teenagers who certainly
tried that patience on more than one occasion !
RIP Mr. Norton and thank you for your years of service (military AND academic) !
