WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Richard James Scullin Jr., 85, of Stone Hill Road died peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at home.
Born in Boston on Oct. 5, 1928, son of Richard J. Scullin Sr. and Mary Sampson Scullin, he grew up in Newton, Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and was a graduate of Nichols Business College in Dudley. He moved to Williamstown in 1963.
An Army veteran, he served with rank of second lieutenant in the years after World War II.
Mr. Scullin was a business owner and inventor, operating Mohawk Stone Products, Tempwood Stoves and Powdershield Technologies, all in Adams.
He was a devoted husband, avid gardener, talented woodworker (marquetry and parquetry) and all-around cheerful, charming gentleman.
He leaves his wife, the former Dorothy Dodworth; two daughters, Laura Scullin Tomlinson of Johnson, Vt., her children Sarah, James, Morgan, Inanna and Aryk, and great-grandchildren Caleb and Asher, and Charlotte Scullin Clark and her husband, Geoff, of San Diego, and children Alexander, Austin and Aurora; a son, Richard J. Scullin III and his wife, Karin Stack, of Williamstown and daughter, Hazel; three sisters, Marijeanne Scullin Dengler of Weston, Gretchen Scullin Simpson of Boxford and Madeleine Scullin McLean of Manchester, and a brother-in-law, George Bernard of Chatham.
His sister Elizabeth Scullin Bernard died 2013.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Scullin will be Saturday, March 29, at noon at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
