Donald E. Anderson, 81

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Donald Edward Anderson, 81, of Smith Avenue died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at his home.

Born in North Adams on May 20, 1932, a son of Harry and Bertha Lapan Anderson, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School. He also graduated from the University of Massachusetts and received his master's degree in education from North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

An Army veteran, he held the rank of specialist, third class.

Mr. Anderson taught English at McCann Technical School in North Adams from 1967 until 1990. He started his teaching career at the Little Red School House in South Williamstown and then taught English at Pittsfield High School. He was last employed as a dispatcher for the Police Department.

He was a communicant of the Parish of Sts. Patrick & Raphael in Williamstown.

His wife, the former Gay Gelheiser, whom he married June 24, 1961, in St. Patrick's Church, died March 7, 2011.

He leaves his daughter, Jane E. Anderson and her companion, Michael DiGennaro, of North Adams; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Matthew DiGennaro; his brother-in-law, George Gelheiser, and sister-in-law, Elaine Anderson, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Harry Anderson, and two sisters, Janet C. Cunningham and Isabelle Singley.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Anderson will take place Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown. Burial will take place at a later date with military honors.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 16, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Donations are suggested for HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the funeral home.
