Irene E. Mattison, 96

June 15, 2016


WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Irene Edwarda (Lapine) Mattison, 96, of Leeds, Mass., and formerly of Williamstown, died Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at her home.



She was born in North Adams, Mass., on June 13, 1920, daughter of Charles W. and Aurora (Caron) Lapine. She graduated from the Drury High School.



Irene was first employed at the former Candyland. She assisted her husband in the operation of Mount Williams Greenhouses for many years until her retirement.



She was a longtime volunteer at the Williamstown Women's Exchange. Irene was an active member of the Williamstown Grange, where she served as its secretary for many years. She attended the Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown.



Irene enjoyed baking, sewing and knitting.



She was the widow of Lawrence Elmer Mattison, who died on February 1, 2010. They were married on October 12, 1940.  



Survivors include one daughter, Anne Mattison of Andover, Mass.; one son, Lawrence C. Mattison and his wife Paula of Florence, Mass.; two grandchildren, Dr. Michelle Mattison of Hatfield, Mass., and Dr. Melissa Mattison of Northampton, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren, including Jack Mattison-Gulotta, Cole Mattison-Gulotta, Grace O'Day and Mattison O'Day; and nieces and nephews.



She was predeceased by her grandson, Matthew Mattison; her son-in-law, Dana Scholtz; and two sisters and two brothers, Rita Bishop, Anita Lapine, Eugene Lapine and Louis Lapine.



Funeral notice: The funeral for Irene Mattison will be Monday June 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will follow in Eastlawn cemetery.  



A calling hour will be held Monday morning from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.

Dear Larry and Anne,
I am so sorry to hear of Irene's passing. She was a wonderful person. I worked with her in the grange for many years. She was a willing and hard worker. May happy memories comfort you in this difficult time.
