WILLIAMSTOWN -- Odvar August Ness, 99, of North Falmouth, a former resident of Williamstown, died Monday at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in Oslo, Norway, on Sept. 17, 1902, son of Karl and Anna Ness, he attended schools in Norway and later in Hanover, Germany, where he received an engineering degree at the Technical University. He worked in Switzerland before moving to Boston in the late 1920s, where he worked for Stone and Webster. He also worked in New York City.
In 1935, Mr. Ness became employed with the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, retiring in 1969 as chief engineer in the research and development division. After retiring, he moved to Cape Cod.
A member of St. John's Church and the Williams College Faculty Club, he enjoyed skiing, climbing, hiking, tennis and fishing.
He and his wife, the former Elena Matukas, were married in 1931.
Besides his wife, of Falmouth, he leaves a daughter, Nina Nau of Hanover; a sister, Maghild Spro of Oslo, and a grandson. He leaves a grandson, Andreas, and a niece, Sigrid McWilliams of Williamstown. He was predeceased by two brothers, Wilhelm and George.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mr. Ness will be held in Falmouth at the convenience of the family. The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions in Mr. Ness' memory may be made to Village Ambulance Service or to St. John's Episcopal Church, Williamstown, through GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, M.A., 01267, which is in charge of the arrangements.
