Jeanne M. Steuer, 87

August 14, 2016

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Jeanne M. (Noel) Steuer, 87, of Williamstown died peacefully Sunday, August 14, 2016, surrounded by her children, at Williamstown Commons. In her final days, she was able to spend time with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Jeanne was born in Adams, Mass., on July 26, 1929, daughter of Leon and Florida (LaFrance) Noel.  She attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School with the class of 1947.

She was first employed by Noel Inc. and later worked for Fashion Fabrics and managed the Strong Hewitt Store in the Colonial Shopping Center. Jeanne last owned and operated "The Sewing Nook" store in the Colonial Shopping Center for about 12 years until her retirement. But what she really considered her true work — and her life's joy — was creating a strong, loving family, and giving back through her charitable acts.

She was a faithful communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, and spent countless hours every year sewing and helping with area churches' bazaars. She was also a member of Le Cercle Francais, and attended many adult education classes. While her children were growing up, Jeanne was active in PTA groups and the Girl Scouts.

As a 34-year cancer survivor, she inspired all with her relentless energy. Until her last days, she enjoyed sewing and handiwork, and was well-known for her quilts. Her way with flowers was legendary, and her gardening skills benefitted not only her children's gardens but also the greenhouse of Sweetwood while she lived there.

She was the widow of William Arthur Steuer, who died on February 5, 2009.  They were married on April 30, 1949.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara J. Steuer of Adams and Karen M. Steuer, with her husband Paul Sherman of Lyndeborough, N.H.; two sons, Robert C. Steuer, with his wife Andrea, of Shaftsbury, Vt., and Michael W. Steuer, with his wife Cheryl, of Adams; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Ratchford and her husband John, Timothy Pregent and his wife Amy, Jennifer Hoffman and her husband Doug, Kristie Dixon and her husband Woody, Michael Steuer Jr. and his wife Cristal, Justin Steuer and his wife Breighton, and Natalie Jennette and her husband Dennis; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Mendel of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; one brother, Francis Noel of Savoy, Mass; and many nieces and nephews.

Two sisters and one brother — Rita Lussier, Nancy Noel and Leon R. Noel — are deceased.

Funeral notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Jeanne Steuer will be celebrated Thursday, August 18, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.  Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams.

A calling hour will be held on Thursday morning from 10-11 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St. North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in care of the funeral home.
