Agatha DeCarley

Agatha Rose DeCarley, 98, a former resident of Cold Spring Road, died yesterday at Sweet Brook Care Centers.
Born in Pownal, Vt., on Sept. 10, 1903, daughter of Patrick F. and Katherine O'Connell Purcell, she attended Oak Hill Academy in Pownal and graduated from the former Williamstown High School, where she was salutatorian. She later graduated from Bliss Business College in North Adams.
She was employed in business management for several area firms, including North Adams Manufacturing, Gale Shoe Co. and Gaevert Film Co., and later for the Holstein Freisian Association of America Inc.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. Patrick's Church, where she worked as secretary and bookkeeper. She enjoyed writing and reciting prose and poetry, and had written a column, "Agatha's Musings," for the Sweetwood Retirement Community newsletter for more than 10 years. She also enjoyed music, including playing the piano and ukulele.
Her husband, Raymond DeCarley, died June 20, 1983.
She leaves several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10:30 a.m. from GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown by the Rev. William Cyr, pastor. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m., when the family will be in attendance. Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, Vt. Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. DeCarley's memory may be made to St. Patrick's Church through the office of MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201, which is in charge of the arrangements.
