Mary E. Sawyer

Mary Elizabeth Sawyer, 90, of Jerome Drive died Saturday at Williamstown Commons.

Born in North Adams on May 17, 1911, daughter of Henry H. and Mary Elizabeth Williams Spencer, she attended St. Andrew's School in Rochester, N.Y. She graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1929 and attended Wellesley College and the Rochester (N.Y.) Collegiate Center, where she took fine arts classes. She moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y., in 1956 and returned to Williamstown in 1973.

She was secretary to the superintendent of Williamstown Public Schools from 1942 to 1956 and was a senior clerk for the Mount Vernon public schools. She also worked as a media analyst for Continental Wax Co. in New York and as a census supervisor for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

She was managing editor of the Republican Party publication The Women's Voice, publicity director of the Massachusetts Association of School Secretaries, and charter president of the Educational Secretaries of Mount Vernon, N.E.A.

Mrs. Sawyer was a missionary for First Congregational Church of Williamstown, where she served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher, and for St. Mark's Congregational Parish in Roxbury. She also taught at Vernon Heights (N.Y.) Congregational Church, where she was the clerk and school superintendent.

She served two terms on the board of directors of Berkshire County chapter of the Red Cross and on the Williamstown Council on Aging. She founded and served as editor of Village Beautiful, a monthly paper for senior citizens, and worked at the Women's Exchange for many years. She was treasurer of the Republican Town Committee.

She enjoyed painting, and her watercolors were exhibited in shows at the Lawrence Art Museum at Williams College and at the Museum of History and Art in Albany, N.Y.

Her husband, Raymond Arcelius Sawyer, whom she married in 1956, died June 8, 1992.

She leaves several cousins.

A memorial service will be held from First Congregational Church of Williamstown on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 10:30, with the Rev. Carrie Ball officiating. Burial will take place in the family lot, Westlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. If friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Sawyer's name may be made to First Congregational Church of Williamstown through GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267, which is in charge of arrangements.
