Gerard Edward Smith

Gerard Edward Smith, 85, of 35 Thistle Path, a former businessman and civic leader in Williamstown and North Berkshire, died Thursday at home. He was a former chairman of the Williamstown Planning Board.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 13, 1916, son of Albert E. and Mary Elizabeth Farrell Smith, he graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and attended New York University.
He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, serving in England, France and Germany from 1943 to 1945.
Mr. Smith was employed by several construction firms in the Caribbean and South America. After his honorable discharge from the military, he became employed as a senior executive with a chemical firm in New York City. In 1964, he moved to Williamstown, where he owned and operated the Berkshire Hills Motel and the former Scott & Bratton Gift Store, both on Cold Spring Road.
An active community leader, he also served on the Charles H. McCann Technical School Committee and was a volunteer for Hospice of Northern Berkshire and the Northern Berkshire Literacy Association.
He was a longtime member and past president of the Williamstown Board of Trade, and a member and past president of the Mohawk Trail Association and of the Williamstown Rotary Club. He was a delegate to the Berkshire County Regional Planning Commission and chairman of the United Way fund drive. He was a trustee and former chairman of the Greylock Village Homeowners Association.
He and his wife, the former Mary Ellen "Marian" White, were married April 27, 1946, in St. Patrick's Church in Yorktown Heights, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Raymond Smith of Pittsfield and Gerard Smith of Williamstown; a sister, Mildred Ehlers of Springhill, Fla.; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Hugh Smith, who died Sept. 20, 1979, and two brothers, Albert Smith and Raymond Smith.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown, with the Rev. William F. Cyr, pastor of St. Patrick's and St. Raphael's Parish in Williamstown, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.
