Muriel B. Rowe

Muriel Buesing Rowe, 69, of 303 Harlan Road, North Bennington, Vt., died Monday following a long illness. She retired as a secretary from Williams College.
Born April 5, 1932, in Belvidere, Ill., daughter of Erich W. and Emma Sanno Buesing, she attended local schools in Marengo, Ill., and studied political science and business at Duke University, graduating in 1955.
She moved to California and worked for Del Monte Foods, then for the Extension Service of the University of California at Berkeley. She also lived in Cambridge, Providence, R.I., and Ann Arbor, Mich., until her husband, Leonard Carl Rowe, accepted a political science professorship at Bennington (Vt.) College. They moved to North Bennington in 1964.
Mrs. Rowe worked as executive secretary for the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1967-69, as assistant director of admissions at Bennington College from 1971-74, and as senior executive secretary in the dean's office at Williams College beginning in 1974. Upon her retirement in 1998, the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society created the Muriel B. Rowe Prize in recognition of her outstanding service.
She volunteered at numerous organizations, including the Prospect School, the McCullough Library in North Bennington, and the American Cancer and Lung societies. She was a longtime board member of the Sage City Symphony in North Bennington, serving as co-chairwoman for six years.
Mrs. Rowe studied music and was an accomplished pianist and organist, serving as organist for a number of Bennington area churches. She also enjoyed singing, gardening, reading, travel, cooking and t'ai chi.
She and her husband were married in Berkeley on Jan. 23, 1960. Her husband died Jan. 14, 1973.
She leaves two sons, David Rowe of Oakland, Calif., and Daniel Rowe of Salem; a sister, Elizabeth Geiger of Rockville, Ill., and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by five siblings, Clarence and Herman Buesing, Florence Vardee Volk, Verna Hauschildt and Amy Walter, and her parents.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 5 at 2 at North Bennington Congregational Church. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington. Donations in Muriel's honor may be made to the Sage City Symphony through HANSON WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
