Arthur L. George

Arthur Lester George, 100, of 54 Oblong Road died Friday at Sweet Brook Health Care Center. He held many town posts, including forest and tree warden, and moth superintendent

Born on Berlin Mountain in Williamstown on Nov. 23, 1901, son of Harry J. and Caroline Kleinhens George, he attended the former Hemlock Brook School. In 1919, he moved with his family to North Adams, where they had bought the Harrison Farm off Old State Road.

During his youth, he was employed by the former Fleming Garage on State Road in North Adams, and in 1931, he began driving trucks for contractor Harwood D. Moore, hauling marble for the Mount Greylock war memorial tower.

In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving with Squadron K, 137th Army Air Force Base Unit. He attained the rank of sergeant.

After the service, Mr. George moved to Williamstown and made his home on Oblong Road, where he farmed and raised livestock and vegetables.

He was a former inspector for livestock of Berkshire County. A 4-H club leader, he opened the Taconic Stables in 1954. He taught riding to many youngsters and held summer camps, where he organized the Silver Spurs 4-H horse club for local youth members.

From 1974 until he was 80, he raced thoroughbred horses at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal, Vt. His last venture on a horse was on his 94th birthday with his grandson. He also provided hay rides throughout the area.

Mr. George was a longtime member and former trustee of Second Congregational Church.

He was a member of the Williamstown Grange and the Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion, and an honorary member of the Grafton Trail Riders.

He was a former leader of the 4-H club of Berkshire County, a former member of the board of the Berkshire County Extension Agricultural Association and Berkshire County Forest Wardens, and a volunteer in the restoration of the 1753 House in Field Park.

He enjoyed raising raspberries, picking wildflowers, and planting and cutting trees for the town.

He and his wife, the former Clara F. Snyder, were married March 3, 1943.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Arthur L. George of Leo, Ind., and Jonathan D. George and James A. George, both of Williamstown; two daughters, Caroline G. Martel of Pownal and Clare A. Morrison of Williamstown; a brother, Harry A. George of North Adams; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. A daughter, Katherine Hazel George, died Dec. 24, 1954. He also was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters, Earle, Clifford and Henry George, and Gertrude Connors, Emma Anthony, Eva Oakes and Hazel Anthony.


The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 at Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown by the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for the Nursing Scholarship Fund at Sweet Brook Health Care Center or for the donor's choice through the funeral home.
