Clayton E. Shaw Jr., 93, of Watson House Community Care Center in North Bennington, Vt., formerly of Williamstown, died Wednesday at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He had resided with his daughter, Susan Schneski, on Hancock Road in Williamstown from 1999 until moving to Watson House a few months ago.
Born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., on March 20, 1908, son of Dr. Clayton E. Shaw Sr. and Lucy Cottrell Shaw, he attended schools there and graduated in 1926 from the Taft School in Connecticut. He received a bachelor's degree in 1930 from Williams College, where he was a member of the track and basketball teams and of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He received a master's degree in business from Columbia University.
While in his 70s, Mr. Shaw studied jazz improvisation with Nadi Qamar at Bennington College. He also built a log cabin on Babcock Lake in 1951.
Mr. Shaw was employed as a salesman with Noble & Wood Co. of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., selling machinery used in the making of paper throughout the Northeast. Prior to that, he worked in sales in Manhattan, N.Y.
He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge and First United Church, both in Hoosick Falls.
A golfer, he won several tournaments in the region and was instrumental in the layout and creation of several new holes at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. He also bowled in various leagues in the area, most recently in the Retired Men's League in North Adams, until he was almost 90.
He enjoyed writing and had an article published in a sports car magazine and wrote a speech for a local Revolutionary War re-enactment.
His wife, the former Ruth Rowley, whom he married in 1937, died in 1973.
Besides his daughter, he leaves two grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 from First Congregational Church on Main Street in Williamstown. A time of fellowship will follow at the church hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosick Rescue Squad or the Second Chance Animal Shelter of Shaftsbury, Vt., through MAHAR FUNERAL HOME, 43 Main St., Hoosick Falls, NY, which is handling arrangements.
