George Hussey Jr.

Mr. George Hussey Jr., 80, of Sweetwood Nursing Home, 1611 Cold Spring Rd. Williamstown, MA, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at the North Adams Regional Hospital. He was the retired President of the National Standard Company of Niles, Michigan. He also maintained residences in Jupiter, Florida and Oyster Bay Cove, New York.
He was born in New York City on March 11, 1920 a son of the late George Hussey and Pauline (Hawes) Hussey. He was a member of the Buckley School class of 1934 and graduated from Deerfield Academy with the class of 1938. Mr. Hussey graduated from Williams College with the class of 1942. While at Williams, he was the captain of the golf team and the manager of the swim team, as well as the president of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Mr. Hussey was a veteran of World War II and served in the US Army Signal Intelligence Corps where he attained the rank of Technical Sergeant Third Class. He was decorated for his service as a cryptanalyst and received five battle stars and one bronze star serving in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945.
After returning to the Worcester Wire Works, where he went to work as a stenographer prior to the war, Mr. Hussey was called to the National Standard Company headquarters in Niles, Michigan in 1946. For many years, he served as the company’s Corporate Secretary, until he was named President in 1969. He retired in 1980 and moved to Williamstown where he continued his life-long interest in golf.
Mr. Hussey was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown, MA; Memorial Chapel in Hobe Sound, FL; and St. John’s Church in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. He was active in the Williams College Society of Alumni and was awarded its Rogerson Cup in 1992 for his service to the College. Mr. Hussey was a member of the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, MA; the Ekwanok Club in Manchester, VT; the Farmington Country Club; the Creek Club; and Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club.
His first wife was the former Jean Gebhard whom he married in 1943. She died in 1974. Survivors include his second wife, the former Nancy Erskine Grace, whom he married in 1977.

He also leaves his wife’s children- Nancy Terrell Grace of New York City; Caroline Casler of Lloyd Neck, NY; Richard Grace of Lloyd Harbor, NY and Howard Grace of Oyster Bay, NY. In addition, he leaves her ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. A brother, C. Morgan Hussey of Farmington, CT, is deceased.
A memorial service for George Hussey, Jr. will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at 12:00 P.M. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown with the Rev. Peter Elvin, Rector, officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Williams College Faculty Club. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Another memorial service will also be held at a future date in St. John's Church of Cold Spring Harbor, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations mey be made to the Fernwood Botanical Garden at 13988 Rangeline Road, Niles, MI 49120 or to the Williams College Class of 1942 Alumni Fund. The Flynn&Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals at 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247 is in charge of arrangements.
