WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Kathryn G. Winant, 94, of Williamstown passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at her home.
Kathryn was born in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 15, 1926. She was the daughter of Retha Pratt and Claude Lawrence Geyer. A 1944 graduate of the Tudor Hall School in Indianapolis, she went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1948.
An English major, she wrote articles for the local newspaper as well as creative stories for the college literary magazine and was editor of the class yearbook in her senior year. In 2011, two years after her husband's death, she wrote and published "One Washcloth, One Towel," a book to share with others dealing with love, loss and grief.
In 1948, on Sept. 15, she married John H. Winant. Their marriage lasted 61 years, during which they resided in New York City, Williamstown, Alexandria, Va., and London, England. In the 1960s, she was a corporator of the former North Adams Regional Hospital and served as president of the Woman's Auxiliary of that institution. In Virginia, she was president of The Garden Club of Alexandria and was a past member of the Sulgrave Club in Washington, D.C. After her return to the Berkshires in 1992, she served on the Board of Directors of the Berkshire Botanical Garden and was president of the Berkshire Garden Club. She was also a volunteer at the desk at the Clark Art Institute.
Her survivors include her daughter, Claudia W. Ellet and her husband, Van; her son, Peter B. Winant and his wife, Barbara; five grandchildren, Kathryn Ash Deluce, Francis B. Peyton V, Glenn P. Langerwall, Hannah A. Winant and Olivia K. Winant, and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Kathryn will take place Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown and will be livestreamed at: www.youtube.com/c/stjohnswilliamstown/live.
