Phyllis McGuire, 90

August 17, 2021

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Phyllis Eleanor McGuire of Williamstown, formerly of Elmhurst, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, after living in Williamstown for 33 years.

Beloved wife of the late William McGuire. Adored mother of Christopher J. McGuire (and his wife, Cathleen Grogan McGuire) of Massapequa, N.Y., and Jennifer McGuire Sciarratta of Bayside, N.Y. Grandmother of Alyssa Sciarratta Cinturati (and her husband, Steven Cinturati), Nicholas Sciarratta, Jack McGuire and Mary McGuire. Great-grandmother of Angelo and Ariana Cinturati.

Phyllis was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in the Bronx, N.Y., to Agnes Rizzo Daffee of Philadelphia and her husband, Philip C. Daffee of Uj-Verbasz, Hungary. She attended Walton High School and went on to work for Continental Can Corp., where she met her future husband, William McGuire. They were married May 25, 1963, at the Church of Our Saviour on Park Avenue in New York City. She and Willam resided in Elmhurst, Queens, in New York City, where they raised their children Christopher and Jennifer.

In 1988, Phyllis and William retired to the mountains of Williamstown after they fell in love with the area while taking Christopher to and from his alma mater, Williams College. A woman of deep faith, she always became a devout parishioner at her local churches whether in Elmhurst at the Resurrection Ascension Roman Catholic Church or in Williamstown at the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael. Phyllis became a columnist for several publications, including iBerkshires, and eventually for The Berkshire Eagle where she delighted in writing articles for her column entitled "That’s Life."

In February 2021, Williamstown celebrated Phyllis' 90th birthday with her as a parade was thrown in her honor that traveled down Spring Street and was attended by students, store owners, friends and family. She loved being a Williamstown resident and will be missed as a vibrant member of the community.

We are saddened to see that Phyllis has passed away. Seems as though it happened quickly. She was such a sweet and caring person always ready to make a column out of the simplest topics. It was always a good occasion to run into her. We were about equal in height and commiserated about hat often times. Phyllis loved observing the little things in life and opening our eyes to them. Am so glad to have known such a person!

I am sad to learn of Phyllis's death. She was an inspiring lady to meet. She came to the Class of 1962 Mt. Greylock Regional High School to write an article for our "50th" Reunion. She didn't disappoint us. So spirited and fun to be around. Thank you Dear Phyllis for all your wonderful articles and interviews in Berkshire County. We were blessed to know you and may you RIP. We will miss you next year as we celebrate our "60"th Reunion. Thank you for all you did for the community.

Dear Family, I want to express my deepest sympathy for the Loss of your Loving Mom and Grandmother. Such an amazing and LOVING person. I had the pleasure to meet her through her column in the newspaper--she wrote several articles of my teaching career at Brayton Elementary School. I had many delightful telephone conversations with her. I will miss her! May she rest in peace

What a sweet and insatiably curious lady. Phyllis could write about anything and make a compelling story out of the simplest details. She will be missed.
