 Vivian Gibbs Bail

Vivian Mae Gibbs Bail, 90, a resident of Sweet Brook Health Care Center, formerly of 76 Fullerton Ave., Whitman, died Jan. 16 at Sweet Brook Health Care Center.
Born in Whitman on Sept. 3, 1911, daughter of George T. Gibbs and Carrie Lombard Gibbs, she graduated from Whitman High School in 1929. She also graduated from Chandler Secretarial School in Boston in 1931.
Mrs. Bail was employed as an executive assistant at the Kennedy Department Store for several years.
She married Richard Nelson Bail on Aug. 31, 1940, and they were residents of the Back Bay in Boston until they returned to Whitman to raise their family. Her husband died Feb. 18, 2000.
She was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church of Whitman, where she was active in the Capron Club, the Everson Class, the Couples Club and Sunday School. She also taught in the Parish Committee, and was a delegate. She volunteered for many community organizations, including the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Brockton Hospital, the Brockton Art Museum, the YMCA and the Thursday Club.
She enjoyed playing the piano, attending plays and concerts, crewel embroidery and other crafts, and socializing with her close friends in the Koffee Klackers.
She leaves two sons, Dr. Richard N. Bail Jr. of Newton and Fred Bail, a professor at the University of Hawaii; a daughter, the Rev. Carrie Bail, pastor of First Congregational Church in Williamstown; seven grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Tharasher.
Funeral services will take place Monday morning, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church of Whitman. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. Memorial donations are suggested for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children or to Communities Without Borders, which serves AIDS orphanages in Zambia.
