Linda Hughes White,74

March 12, 2022

Linda H. White

1947 – 2022

Linda Hughes White passed away peacefully at Brookdale Filmore Pond in Bennington, Vermont on March 12, 2022 after an extended battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. The eldest of four siblings, Linda was born on December 18, 1947 in New York City. After her earlier education and graduation from Hicksville High School on Long Island, Linda earned her BA degree from Columbia University and her RN degree at the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing in NYC. She married Eric S. White in 1969. They moved to Williamstown in 1974 where she raised their three children, Sarah,Emily and David.

With her nursing background, Linda joined the Williamstown VNA in 1974 and participated in a prenatal program for expectant families to help ensure that they might have a positive experience during childbirth. Given Linda’s passion for the performing arts, she was involved for several decades with various theater activities in the Berkshires. This included the Williamstown Community Theatre. During the 1980s Linda was the drama coach at Mount Greylock Regional School where she directed the annual school play. She co-founded Calliope Theatre Company in 1984. Additional organizations included Thespis, Main Street Stage and Mithstry, a dance ensemble. She also worked with Shakespeare and Company’s Shakespeare-in-the-Schools-Team. Her involvement with the Williamstown Theater Festival included directing the Greylock Project where she taught middle school children play writing and acting. Linda performed a lead role as Hecuba in Trojan Women performed at the Williams College ’62 Center. In addition to her participation in the theater, she volunteered at the Berkshire Chapter of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and with CASA at juvenile court.

She is survived by her husband, Eric White, her three children, Sarah White of San Francisco, CA, Emily White of Amesbury, MA and David White of Pawtucket, RI and her grandchildren, Nicolas Atzei, Wilder and Eleanor Kagay, Carla, Logan and Noah Hauck. She is also survived by her three siblings, Debra Toppeta, Pamela Pascale and Christopher Hughes as well as loving nieces and nephews.

I met Linda on the tennis court. Besides all her other attributes, Linda was a great tennis partner and a good sport! I loved playing tennis with her and grew to admire and respect her. Rest In Peace, Linda.

Our sympathies to Eric and family. We had worked with Linda on a few dance/theater projects several years ago along with the Williams dance program and community events. Her enthusiasm, joy and expertise were always up front and center.
