Dorothy D. Edgerton, 92, of Williamstown, Massachusetts died on Friday, April 1, 2022 at her home. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 19, 1929 to Joseph & Virginia (Pedrick) Dugan.
Dottie, as she was more commonly known to her friends, or Dede, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, grew up in Merion, Pennsylvania, and spent summers in Avalon, NJ. Shortly after graduation from high school, she traveled by ship to Europe during the Holy Year of 1950, where she developed a great love of art and travel. In 1952, she married Samuel Y. Edgerton Jr., who went on to become professor of art history at Williams College. Together, they traveled extensively, spending a year in Lingen Ems, Germany and in Florence, Italy, and visiting many other countries in Europe and Central America, including Mexico and Guatemala.
Inspired by her time and experiences abroad, Dottie became a fabulous cook and loved to entertain. She and Sam raised their family of four children in Brookline, Massachusetts before moving to Williamstown in 1981. At their home in South Williamstown, Dottie cultivated a gorgeous flower, herb, and vegetable garden. She was president of the Williamstown Garden Club, an active member of the South Williamstown Community Association and a Communicant of St. Patrick & Raphael Parish in Williamstown. Known for her kind manner and gracious style, her greatest joy was her family, who loved her deeply.
Her husband, Sam Edgerton Jr., Amos Lawrence Professor of Art, Emeritus died on April 25, 2021. Dottie is survived by her loving children, Perky Edgerton and her husband Brian Meunier, Sam Edgerton III, Mary Edgerton and her husband Christoph Winter - seven grandchildren, Marina, Lela, Peter, Kevin, Chloe, Zach and Phoebe - three great grandchildren, Xavi, Nico and Gabriel, and brother-in-law Eustace Wolfington.
