Sidney D. Ross

Sidney David Ross, 84, of 30 Colonial Ave., former director of research for Sprague Electric Co., died Thursday at home.
Born in Lynn on Jan. 31, 1918, son of Sam and Dora Pross Ross, he graduated from Lynn Classical High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University in 1939 and his master's degree from the University of Boston in 1940. He earned his doctorate of philosophy in organic chemistry from Harvard in 1944.
He was first associated with U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development projects until moving to Williamstown in 1944. He joined the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, supervising chemical projects, and was appointed director of research in 1970. He retired in 1989. From 1989 to 1994, he was employed as a consultant for MRA Labs in Adams.
Mr. Ross received a U.S. Patent Award in Washington, D.C., for capacitor electrolytes in 1960 and wrote more than 100 U.S. and foreign patents. In 1985, he was honored as a Sprague Electric Fellow.
He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the London Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and the Electro-Chemical Society. He also was a member of the Harvard University Alumni Association and of the American Chemical Society since 1940.
He enjoyed reading, hiking and photography.
His wife, the former Rhoda Revman, whom he married Nov. 23, 1942, in Brookline, died Nov. 6, 2000.
He leaves a daughter, Stephanie Ross of St. Louis, and a sister, Esther Backer of Newton.
Graveside services will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
