Joan Victoria (Mark) Carter, 94, of Williamstown, MA, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Tuesday May 7, 2024. She was born on March 1, 1930 in Jamaica a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York to the late Aris and Florence (Arbuthnot) Mark.
Joan grew up in Mineola, Long Island, New York, graduated from Mineola High School in 1948 and New York Teacher’s College, Geneseo now SUNY Geneseo in 1952 where she was a member and President of Sigma Gamma Phi, Arethusa Sorority and an enthusiastic member of the Little Theater. Named to Who's Who in American Universities and College 1950-1951. She married David R. Carter on January 2, 1954 they were married for 55 years until his death on January 10, 2009.
Her years after college Joan taught third and fourth grade and directed the students plays which was important to her, after she stopped teaching and raising her family, she still participated in children’s education through the Head Start program as a substitute teacher.
Joan leaves behind her children Elizabeth Paige Carter and Timothy Mark Carter (Nicole). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Waylon and June Carter, brother Captain William A. Mark.
