Virginia "Ginny" Sheldon, 78

October 28, 2024

Virginia (“Ginny”) Sheldon, 78, of Williamstown, MA passed away October 28, 2024 after a sudden illness. Born in Staten Island, NY she was the daughter of Curtis Callan and Frances (Neyland) Callan. Ginny attended Red Bank High in New Jersey, followed by Middlebury College where she met her husband, Tom. She finished her studies at SUNY Albany, including a Masters in Counseling, while lovingly raising their 3 sons.

Ginny’s lifelong passion was helping and connecting others. She was fiercely devoted and an unmatched sounding board to her family and friends. Ginny also helped countless children as a school counselor at Skano Elementary in Clifton Park and was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for the North Adams Public Schools. She was an indefatigable volunteer, most notably serving as President and a long-time Board member of Williamstown’s Friends of Milne Public Library. She and a small army of devoted volunteers orchestrated thousands of book donations each year, helped launch and run Chapter Two Books, and generated critical funding.

Ginny loved hiking in Williamstown and traveling the world with Tom, going all-in on yoga, Pilates, and spinning classes, zigzagging around the country to visit friends and family, meticulously chronicling multiple families’ genealogy, attending the theater with decades-long friends, testing the shelf-life limits of leftovers, establishing order in the face of complexity, and finishing off that last little bit of ice cream left in the container. Never one to sit still (literally), we all benefited from her boundless energy and selflessness. She was a light, a pillar of support, and the connective tissue to so many— her parents, aunts and uncles, siblings, fellow volunteers, grandkids, co-workers, daughters-in-law, sons, nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends— the depth of which cannot be measured.

Ginny is survived by Husband: Tom Sheldon; Sons: Tom Jr. (Jeanine), Andy (Lisa), Matt (Lisa); Brother: Curtis Callan; Sister: Anne Cunningham (Scott); Aunt: Peggy Altmann (Eb); and 8 Grandchildren: Mackenzie, Zavi, Anya, Mia, Sylvia, Jack, Alexander, and Scottie.

A celebration of life will be held at a yet-to-be-named future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Friends of the David and Joyce Milne Public Library, Inc at: https://www.milnelibraryfriends.org/support. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com.

Recollections & Sympathy For the Family
Post Comment
Dear Tom and Family, It is so hard to process the shocking news that Ginny is gone. I only just saw her in September at our 60th High School reunion, and so enjoyed re-connecting with her after many long years. of being out of touch We had such a wonderful long conversation that to my mind could have gone on much longer. I left the reunion thinking I would somehow like to stay in touch with her. My heartfelt sympathy to all her family and friends. May she rest in peace.

Tom and Family, We are taken aback to see notice of Ginny's passing. Our concern and sympathies go out to you. Ginny was so involved and active with and for our town. She was the ultimate volunteer so willing and eager to take on responsibilities. She was a fine leader. There are many empty holes around town that now need filling. She will be greatly missed - and most of all by you and your family.
We are so sorry.

to tom and the entire family and extended family of ginny;it is hard to process the loss of ginny. just this past september we had the great pleasure of ginny and tom's company at our 60th red bank new jersey high school class of '64 reunion. their presence and happy participation helped to make it a better event. ginny spoke lovingly about family as well as expressing her continued pleasure with the many civic and literary activities in which she was so successful but more importantly , helped the quality of life in your communities. she will be missed. may she rest in peace.

Ginny came into my life more than 36 years ago. She was more than a mother-in-law… she was a second mother to me and a dear friend. I only hope she knew the positive impact she had on so many people, not just her family but her friends, the community and the students she served over her career. Her legacy can be found in the 3 kind men she raised and the 8 beautiful grandchildren who she left her imprint on. Rest peacefully Ginny.

Ginny was the kindest, most thoughtful person. She brightened every one of my work days at the Milne Public Library, always taking the time to chat and ask what books I might need for the Teen Room. Oftentimes, I would come in to find a stack of books at my desk that she thought would fit the bill! I know that she made all of staff at the Library feel welcomed and appreciated.

I am shocked and devastated by this news. Ginny and Tom are two of my favorite people. Can’t imagine the heartbreak this brings, not only to her family, but to so many others whose lives she affected. What a loss to the entire community. My heart goes out to Tom and the family., from a fellow “Midd Kid.”

Ginny was devoted to leaving her family and town a better place. She was an energizer bunny of a woman and accomplished so much. It doesn’t seem possible that her energy could be stopped. She was a good friend and confidant and I will remember her always.

One of the smartest, hard-working and thoughtful people I've been lucky enough to know in my life. A great friend and colleague to me personally and a great asset to her community whose efforts will be missed. On behalf of my family, our deepest condolences to Tom.
