Lois Courtney

Lois Courtney, 71, of North Hoosac Road died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of former Berkshire County Sheriff John D. Courtney.

Born in Biddeford, Maine, on Nov. 23, 1930, daughter of Raymond L. and Barbara H. Lawe Moulen, she attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School. She also attended the former Bliss Business College in North Adams and St. Anselm College.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Courtney was employed as a dental hygienist until her marriage to John Dennis Courtney Jr., on Sept. 12, 1953. She had resided in Dalton while her husband was employed by the Massachusetts State Police and moved to Williamstown in 1957 when he became chief of police. They moved to Pittsfield in 1962 when her husband was elected high sheriff of Berkshire County.

She served as head matron at the Berkshire County House of Correction until 1978 when they moved to Brentwood, N.H. In 1989, they moved to Naples, Fla., where she was employed as a secretary at the Rockingham County Nursing Home. They returned to Williamstown in October 2001.

She enjoyed reading and playing cards.

She leaves a daughter, Town Clerk Mary Kennedy of Williamstown; a son, John Dennis Courtney III of Pittsfield; her stepmother, Wilma P. Moulen of Williamstown; a brother, Alfred Moulen of Cheshire; a stepbrother, Curtis A. Moulen of Williams-town, and six grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Lois E. Courtney will be held from Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. William Cyr, pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot in East Lawn Cemetery, Williamstown. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Lois E. Courtney may be made to the St. Patrick's Food Pantry through the office of the GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
