Gerald Taylor Sr.

Gerald M. Taylor Sr., 81, of 9 Brooks Ave., Newport, R.I., a radio broadcaster and photographer, died Sunday afternoon. He was the father of Holly A. Taylor of Williamstown.

Born in Newport on Dec. 9, 1920, son of Andselm F. and Victoria Carpentier Taylor, he was educated there.

He served as a photojournalist in the Army during World War II.

Prominent on the Newport news scene, he was involved with publishing newspapers following his discharge in 1947. He broadcast his "Newport Radio Express" news program from his home studio until his retirement in 1985. The half-hour news program was followed by a 30-minute call-in opinion show or interviews with guests from governors to bishops, to yachting captains, to film and publishing celebrities.

He was elected to the original Charter Commission and was a charter member of the Newport Kiwanis Club, later changing his affiliation to the Newport Lions.

As a Newport stringer for CBS and later ABC News, he filmed the revival of the America's Cup trials and races and numerous other yachting events, the sinking of the Andrea Doria and the USS Bennington explosion. He filmed the presidential visits of presidents from Roosevelt through Nixon.

As a photographer for United Press International and on a free-lance basis, his work appeared in Sports Illustrated, Time, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Women's Wear Daily. He also published features and photographs in the Providence Journal.

He was married to the former Adelle Baker for 54 years.

Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves three sons, Gerald M. Taylor Jr. of Newport, Christopher A. Taylor of Portsmouth, R.I., and Mark F. Taylor of Westport, Conn. Another son, Paul Michael Taylor, died in 1999.

Services for will be Thursday, May 30, at 9 from MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 375 Broadway, Newport, R.I., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Joseph's Church, corner of Broadway and Mann Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
