Juanita Terry

Juanita Terry, 95, of Spring Street, died Sunday at Springside of Pittsfield.

Born July 25, 1906, in Evangeline, La., daughter of William Ernest Terry Sr. and Marie Effie Boudreaux, she graduated as valedictorian of Littlefield High School in Littlefield, Texas, in 1925 and received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from Louisiana State University in 1929.

She completed a master of arts degree in English literature from LSU in 1931. She also received a bachelor's degree in library science from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. In 1939, she earned her master of science degree in library science at Columbia University in New York City.

During her college years, she worked at LSU as assistant of the library catalogue and order departments. She was also the secretary of its Library School, in charge of gifts and exchanges, and acting head of the order department.

During World War II, she entered the Marine Corps on March 6, 1943, serving in San Diego, Oceanside, Honolulu, Mauna Loa Ridge and Camp Pendleton. She achieved the rank 1st lieutenant as a security officer in charge of classified correspondence and publications. After her discharge in 1946, she served in the USMC Reserves with rank of captain until 1950.

From 1947-1949, Miss Terry served as reference librarian at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. In 1949, she left Texas for New York, where she attended Columbia University to work on a doctorate, and served as senior reference librarian there in 1952.

After traveling the world, Miss Terry spent the several last decades of her life as a resident of Spring Street in Williamstown.

On Aug. 15, 1952, Miss Terry began on the library staff of Williams College as a reference librarian, where she remained employed until her retirement in 1971.

She was a member of the American Legion Richard A. Butler Post 152 in Williamstown.

Her hobbies included book collecting, food, gardening and hiking. She traveled the globe, and loved New Zealand and Australia.

She leaves three sisters, Marie Terry, Carmelite Leblanc and Naomi Anderson, all of Baton Rouge, La., and a brother, William Terry Jr. of Kentucky.She was predeceased by a sister, Roma Terry.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Aug. 2, at 2 at Eastlawn Cemetery at Veterans Circle in Williamstown. Arrangements are by GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring Street, Williamstown. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be sent in her name to the American Library Association, ATTN: Development Dept., Southeast Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611.
