Hilda Betten

July 26, 2002

Hilda Bashevkin Betten, 85, formerly of North Adams, died Friday at her home in Marco Island, Fla.

A native of North Adams, she was born April 2, 1917, the daughter of David and Annie Feder Bashevkin. She graduated from Drury High School and received her bachelor of arts degree from Skidmore College, which honored her for her long and distinguished service as a volunteer recruiter and interviewer of candidates for admission. She also received a master's degree in Library Science from Worcester State College.

Mrs. Betten had worked as a social worker at the Women's Reformatory in Framingham until her marriage. After earning her master's degree in library science, she created an inventory of all the resources of the libraries of the colleges and universities located in Worcester. That creation led to a consortium of those libraries.

In addition to her volunteer work at Skidmore College, she volunteered at the Jewish Center of Marco Island and as a fund-raiser for the creation of the Urgent Care Center in Marco Island.

Mrs. Betten was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Morris H. Betten, and a daughter, Sandra Gail Missal of Pittsford, N.Y.

She leaves a daughter, Teena Cohen of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Alan Betten of Baltimore; three sisters, Esther Lipton of Pittsfield, Ruth Kelman of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Helen Yulman of Albany, N.Y., and Palm Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Irving Bashevkin of North Adams, Robert Bashevkin of Williamstown and William Bashevkin of Baltimore, Md., and six grandchildren.
