Bert E. Benson, 73

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Bert Edward Benson, 73, of 66 Pines Lodge Park, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

He was police chief in Clarksburg from 1954 to 1972.

Born in Bennington, Vt., on June 2, 1929, son of Adelbert Adnewick Benson Sr. and Mary Agnes Bosley Benson, he was educated in Readsboro, Vt., schools.

Mr. Benson was a member of Local 151 Pipefitters and Welders Union. He worked for them throughout the United States and Canada for 25 years, retiring in 1989. He first worked for the former Arnold Print Works and the former Carlow's Service Station, and for the former Deerfield Glassine Co. in Monroe Bridge for six years.

He moved to Cheshire in 1972 and to Williamstown in 2002. He had spent winters in Fort Myers, Fla., since 1989 and summers in the Berkshires. A communicant of St. Francis' Church in North Adams, Mr. Benson was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in North Adams and the Lodge of Masons in Cheshire.

He and his wife, the former Florence Theresa Moreau, were married Nov. 27, 1947.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Patricia Ann Goodell at home; a son, Arnold Edward Benson and his wife, Deidre, of Westboro; three brothers, Adelbert A. Benson Jr. of Stamford, Vt., Francis Benson of Hartford, N.Y., and Lawrence Benson of Silver City, N.M.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey A. Goodell of Clarksburg, Tammy L. Goodell of North Adams, and Rhianna, Leah and Adam Benson of Westboro; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Goodell of Clarksburg and Angel Goodell of North Adams.

He was predeceased by a sister, Eva Benson Bushika.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Graveside committal services for Mr. Benson will be Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 3 at the Benson family plot in Cheshire Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

The omission of flowers is requested. Memorial donations are suggested for the Clarksburg Highway Department through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
