Eugene George Sorenson

Eugene George Sorenson, 80, of 132 Riverside Drive, died early yesterday morning at home, following a brief illness. He was a former highway and cemetery superintendent and served on the Williamstown Housing Authority.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 28, 1921, son of Charles G. and Mary McQuillan Sorenson, he was educated in schools there and graduated from a vocational high school. He also had resided in Rosedale, N.Y.
After he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942, he completed a Captain of Port School and served as a specialist second class for port security for the remainder of World War II. He was awarded a number of decorations and received an honorable discharge in 1945.
Mr. Sorenson was employed by the New York City Department of Sanitation as a supervisory clerk until his retirement in 1973. He then moved to Williamstown, where he worked for the Highway Department and was superintendent from Jan. 1, 1980 until retiring in 1981, and also served as cemetery superintendent from Nov. 1, 1976 to Dec. 31, 1981. He served on the Housing Authority from 1979 to 1984 and as town constable from 1975 to 1981.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Shrine in North Adams. A member of Richard A. Ruether American Legion Post 152, he was active in building its new post home. He was a life member of VFW Post 8304, where he served as quartermaster. He also participated in many programs at the Clark Art Institute. During the 1970s, he was known among residents of the Spruces as the "mayor."
While in Rosedale, he was a member of Pope Pius X Church and its Holy Name Society, and was a co-founder of the Rosedale Volunteer Ambulance Company.
His wife, the former Eunice Helen Muroski, whom he married on Jan. 2, 1943, died June 17, 1995. He leaves two daughters, Eunice Helen Rudzitis of Brooklyn and Patricia M. Sorenson of Manhattan, N.Y.
FUNERAL NOTICE --The funeral for Eugene G. Sorenson will be Monday at 8 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 Main St., North Adams, followed by a funeral Mass at 8:45 at Our Lady of Mercy Shrine, Massachusetts Avenue, North Adams.
Burial will follow in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 6. Donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Eunice Helen and Andris Rudzitis of Brooklyn, and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Muroski of Williamstown and Theodora Oppegard of Ocala, Fla.
