Henry William Oliver, 86, of Ide Road died Wednesday at home.
Born on Jan. 6, 1916, in Pittsburgh, son of Augustus K. and Margaretta Wood Oliver, he attended Shadyside Academy and graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., and summa cum laude from Yale University. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Chicago.
A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific and in China, and retired from the Marine Corps Reserves with the rank of major. Mr. Oliver was a professor of mathematics at Williams College, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served several terms as rector's warden and was a member of the vestry. He was a founding member of the Chapel of St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet, where he spent summers and was a member of its vestry for many years. He also was chairman of the Williamstown Community Chest and sat on the board of trustees of Pine Cobble School.
With his sons, he raced Lightnings, 19-foot sailboats, and won the Maine Lightning Championship in 1978.
Leaves his wife, the former Ramona Elser, whom he married in 1940; two sons, John E. Oliver of Wilton, Conn., and David W. Oliver of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Joan Oliver of Los Angeles and Sheila Oliver of Philadelphia; two brothers, George S. Oliver II of Sewickley, Pa., and John B. Oliver of Rochester, Vt.; a sister, Margaretta O. Schroeder of Amelia Island, Fla., and 12 grandchildren. A son, H. William Oliver Jr., died in 1958.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Henry William Oliver will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Williamstown, by the Rev. Peter Elvin.
Burial will be in the family plot in Williams College Faculty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. John's Episcopal Church or Chapel of St. James the Fisherman, in care of GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Anne O'Connell Oliver of Wilton, Conn., and Roberta Bonisson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son-in-law, Dean Rosencranz of Philadelphia, and many nieces and nephews.
