Caroline Copeland

Caroline Copeland, 86, of Oblong Road died Monday at Sweet Brook.
Born in Hanover, N.H., on July 15, 1916, daughter of Edmund E. and Emily Emerson Day, she graduated from Smith College in 1938.
Mrs. Copeland was director of the Williams-Vassar Exchange Program at Williams College just prior to the college becoming coed. She taught at Pine Cobble School for several years and was its director from 1961 to 1966.
A member of St. John's Episcopal Church, she was a docent at the Clark Art Institute for 25 years. She was a member of the Williamstown Garden and the Friday clubs, and was active with the Smith Alumni as an officer of her class.
She married Frederick C. Copeland, dean of admissions at Williams for 32 years, in 1939 in Ithaca, N.Y.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Frederick C. Copeland Jr. of Avon, Conn., and Winsor R. Copeland of Bucharest, Romania; a daughter, Emily Leary of Duxbury; two brothers, Emerson Day of Lebanon, N.H., and David Day of Denver, and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Caroline Day Copeland will be conducted Friday, Jan. 31, at 2 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector. A reception will follow at the Williams College Faculty Club. There will be no calling hours.
Burial will take place in the family lot at Church of the Messiah Cemetery in Woods Hole. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Copeland Scholarship Fund at Williams College through GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267 or directly to the college.
