Philip Spencer Hart, 91, of Sweetwood died Tuesday at home. He was a longtime businessman and community leader.
Born in Springfield on Oct. 26, 1911, son of Walter J. and Mary Ann Spencer Hart, he was a 1930 graduate of Springfield Central High School and a 1934 graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 2nd Evacuation Hospital Unit.
He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 152, the Berkshire County Pharmacy Association, the board of trustees of the College of Pharmacy, and a past Harper Center director. He also was an active member and past president of the Williamstown board of trade and for many years volunteered at the town's information booth.
His wife, the former Lucy Lyons, whom he married Jan. 26, 1946, died May 29, 1976. He leaves nephews and a niece, Mary M. DeBlieux of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Philip Spencer Hart is survived by a niece, Mary M. DeBlieux of Pittsfield; two nephews, John F. Lyons Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Joseph P. Lyons of Amherst, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 8, at 10:30 at GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Patrick's Church.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 6, when the family will be in attendance. A wake service will be offered Friday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Adams Regional Hospital or St. Patrick's Church through the funeral home, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
