Archie J. LoPresto

Archie J. LoPresto, 83, of 118 Church St., Proprietor Field, formerly of 136 Luce Road, died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, after being stricken earlier in the day.

Born in New York City on Nov. 2, 1919, son of Joseph and Rose Cilibrasi LoPresto, he moved to Williamstown as a child and graduated in 1938 from the former Williamstown High School, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served from Feb. 7, 1939, to 1945 in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans on the USS Capella, USS Colorado, USS Effective and USS Mayrant as a chief yeoman. He received a number of decorations.

Mr. LoPresto was the customer service manager at the former Sprague Products in North Adams, retiring in 1982. He was first employed as purchasing manager by the former Cornish Wire Co., then by the former Country Peddler and the former Harry Smith Ford dealership.

He was a lifelong communicant of the Parish of St. Patrick and St. Raphael, a longtime member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion, and a member of the Williamstown VFW and the Friendship Club at the Harper Center. He was a golfer in his younger years, and enjoyed the theater and animals.

His wife, the former Hazel M. Orell, whom he married April 22, 1946, in St. Raphael's Church, died July 26, 2000.

He leaves three daughters, Sandra M. LoPresto of Williamstown, Cynthia E. Sears of Ocala, Fla., and Suzette A. Pierce of North Adams; a son, Wayne A. LoPresto of Williamstown; two sisters, Sylvia Scaruffi of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Emily Ventura of Wellsboro, Pa.; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and a stepgreat-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Archie J. LoPresto will be Friday at 1 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 2 at St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown. Burial with military honors conducted by members of the Williamstown American Legion Post 152 will take place at a later date in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, Thursday, from 3 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown Food Pantry or to the Turner Veterans House in Williamstown through the funeral home. Survivors also include three grandchildren, Justin, Nicholas and Natalie LoPresto; two stepgrandchildren, Tiffany and Corey Pierce; a stepgreat-grandchild, Samantha Cormier, and two sisters-in-law, Marilyn LoPresto and Gladys Stackpole. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph LoPresto, who died Sept. 25, 1998, and a sister, Angela Scroggy, who died Nov. 22, 1976. Mr. LoPresto loved animals and was predeceased by his loving dog, Fred.
