John Arthur Rice Sr

John Arthur Rice Sr., 67, of 55 Woodland Dr., Lakeville, Conn., a former resident of Williamstown, died suddenly on Friday at Sharon Hospital.

Born in Williamstown on April 12, 1935, son of Hart and Catherine Murphy Rice, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1953. He attended the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

He served in the Navy for eight years as a machinist's mate.

Mr. Rice was employed as a loan officer for 29 years with Farm Credit Federal Land Bank in Litchfield, Conn. After his retirement in 1994, he worked as a self-employed tax preparer, volunteered for the AARP Tax Program in Salisbury, Conn., and worked as a security guard at the Lime Rock Race Track in Lakeville.

He was a member of the Millerton, N.Y., American Legion, the Salisbury Board of Finance and the Litchfield, Conn., County Cooperative Extension Board. He also was a lifetime member of the National Future Farmers of America Alumni Association, treasurer of the 4-H Advisory Board and a member of the National Rifle Associaton.

He was a communicant and eucharistic minister for St. Mary's Church in Lakeville and a former Knights of Columbus member.

He leaves his wife, Denise Steffens Rice, whom he married Sept. 3, 1959; two daughters, Jacqueline A. Rice of Lakeville and Shelly Rice Bunce of Canaan, Conn.; two sons, John A. Rice Jr. of Williamstown and Raymond H. Rice of Dedham; six sisters, Kathleen Rogers of Edinburgh, Texas, Margaret Bowes of Norfolk, Va., Patricia Austin of Williamstown, Virginia Farmer of Casselberry, Fla., Nancy Bassi and Dorothy Rice, both of Adams; two brothers, Thomas Rice of Tempe, Ariz., and William Rice of Lee, and six grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours are 3 to 7 today at KENNY FUNERAL HOME, 41 Main St., Sharon, Conn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 on Monday, Feb. 17 at St. Mary's Church in Lakeville. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Housatonic Valley FFA Alumni Association in care of HVRHS, or to Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad.
