Howard Alton Coulter

Howard Alton Coulter, 76, of 1606 Pinehurst Drive, Lady Lake, Fla., a native of Williamstown, died Tuesday at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.

He had been visiting the Berkshires for the summer. He was the longtime president and CEO of the former Williamstown National Bank.

Born on Feb. 26, 1927, son of Alton N. and Wilmetta I. Marsh Coulter, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1945. He attended the former Bliss Business College in North Adams.

A Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he enlisted in 1945 and served until 1947. He was recalled to active duty from 1952 to 1953.

Mr. Coulter joined Williamstown National in 1953 and was named president in 1965. He led the bank through a succession of mergers, until his retirement in 1988.

During his career, he also had been proprietor of Taconic Business Service, a business administrator of Williamstown Medical Associates, a registered public accountant and a certified commercial lender. He also was a purchasing agent at Noel Inc.

in North Adams until being recalled to the service.

He served on numerous banking and civic organizations, and was a past president of the Williamstown Board of Trade, Boys’ Club and the Community Chest.

He was a member of Williams Lodge AF&AM; the Scottish Rite Lodge, Council and chapter in Pittsfield; a 32nd-degree Mason in the Valley of Springfield and a member of Melha Temple AAONMS of the Mystic Shrine in Springfield.

He also was a member and trustee of Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion and VFW Post 8304. He was a member of Williamstown High’s the Fabulous Forties and a life member of the National Rifle Association.

His hobbies were golfing, motorcycling and hunting.

He leaves his wife, the former Camille Elise Chenail; three sons, Scott Alton Coulter of Lakeville, Stuart Ralph Coulter of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., and Tracy Howard Coulter of Hubbardston; two sisters, Dorothy A. Davidson of Waco, Texas, and Nellie A. Coulter of Orrs Island, Maine, and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- There will be no calling hours. Mr. Coulter is to be cremated and, at his request, there will be no formal funeral.

A memorial service will be held at the veterans’ lot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association through the office of GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
