Ferman Leroy Turner Jr

August 23, 2003

Ferman Leroy Turner Jr., 83, formerly of Williamstown, died Saturday at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, where he had resided for several years.

Born in Boston on Jan. 2, 1920, son of Ferman L. Turner Sr. and Bessie J. Williams Turner, he moved to Williamstown as a child and was a 1939 graduate of the former Williamstown High School.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army coastal artillery, but was discharged after a short time because of a previous injury. He then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery in Montreal in 1943 and served until 1945.

Mr. Turner was a custodian at Mount Greylock Regional High School for 23 years, retiring in 1984. Before that, he had been employed by the former Gavaert Co. and as a chauffeur and gardener for 10 years for the family of the late Herbert Botsford.

He was a member of First Congregational Church and a past commander of Richard A. Ruether American Legion Post 152, where he was awarded a life membership in 1982.

He also worked with the Williamstown Fire Department and the local forest rangers. A Revolutionary War buff, he gave presentations in schools and to other groups on this subject in a lecture he called “Show and Tell.”

In the fall of 1992, he donated his 200-year-old house to the American Legion with the stipulation that it be used for veterans’ housing. Named the Turner House in his honor, it is dedicated to providing housing and services to homeless veterans.

He leaves a sister, Betty Green of Concord, Calif.
