Edith Mary Ensign, 85, of 382 Water St. died yesterday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital, where she was admitted Thursday.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., on Dec. 16, 1917, daughter of Gordon E. and Charlotte H. Rudolph Plant, she graduated from East High School there.
She moved to North Adams in 1974 and to Williamstown in 2000.
Mrs. Ensign was a homemaker. She was employed for a short time at the former Boston Store in Pawtucket.
While in Pawtucket, she was a member of Park Place Congregational Church.
She enjoyed flower gardening.
Her husband, John Frederick Ensign, whom she married June 6, 1942, died Dec. 9, 1973.
She leaves two daughters, Charlene E. Stanlewicz James of Williamstown, with whom she made her home, and Jan C. Sword of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, John G. Ensign of Bennington, Vt.; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL HOME -- A memorial service for Edith Plant Ensign will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Williamstown Community Bible Church. Burial will take place Thursday, Sept. 11, at noon at the family plot in Riverside Cemetery on Pleasant Street in Pawtucket.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Williamstown Community Bible Church in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include six grandchildren, Deborah A. Stanlewicz of Pownal, Joseph M. Stanlewicz of Agawam, Robert J. Sword of Clearwater, Fla., James D. and Jason D. Sword, both of St. Petersburg, and Donna Stanlewicz of North Adams. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed family activities, gardening and birds. She especially loved butterflies.
