Malcolm L. "Mel" Picard

Malcolm L. "Mel" Picard, 68, of 118 Church St., Proprietor's Field, died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in North Adams on Aug. 29, 1935, son of Walter and Corrine Archambeau Picard, he was a 1954 graduate of the former Williamstown High School, where he played varsity basketball and football and was an honorable mention to the All-Western Massachusetts football team.
He worked for the town of Williamstown for a short time before serving in the Army from 1957 to 1959. He was stationed in France and played on an Army football team. He then served four years in the Army Reserve.
Mr. Picard was employed for more than 22 years by Crane & Co. at the Excelsior division on Roberts Drive in North Adams. Before that, he worked at the former Sprague Electric Co.
He was a communicant of St. Raphael's Church, a longtime member of American Legion Post 152, a member of Greylock Community Club in North Adams and a strong supporter of local youth athletics.
He coached in the Williamstown Little League and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.
He and his wife, the former Patricia Garner, celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary Oct. 14.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Tammy Vallee of Ashland and Tricia Koch of North Adams; two sons, Allan Picard of Verbank, N.Y., and Thomas Picard of Williamstown, and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lynn Picard.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of Malcolm L. "Mel" Picard will take place Wednesday at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with the Rev. Mark Burke, pastor of St. Patrick's and St. Raphael's Parish, officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Oct. 28, from 4 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for the Mount Greylock Regional High School Athletic Program through the funeral home.
Survivors include 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Picard, Jeffrey Picard, Megan Bedard, Melissa Picard, Scott Picard, Ryan Vallee, Eric Picard, Michael Picard, Tyler Picard, Jonathon Koch and Andrew Koch.
