Harold E. Haviland

Harold E. Haviland, 83, of 20 Harrison Ave. died yesterday at the Sweet Brook Care Center.
Born in Stockbridge on Dec. 20, 1919, son of Edward and Emma Smith Haviland, he attended schools in Norwalk, Conn., then moved to Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1939.
He was a World War II veteran, serving with the Army as a staff sergeant. He last worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was stationed at the Williamstown post office, retiring in 1974.
He also owned and operated Harold Haviland Painting and Decorating Co. He worked for the buildings and grounds department at Williams College after the war.
He was a longtime member of the Williamstown Community Bible Church and a former member of the town recreation committee. He coached Little League for several years.
He was also a member of Williams College Quarterback Sideline Club. He was a member of the Williamstown Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Richard Reuther Post 152 American Legion.
He leaves his wife, Margaret Kelly Haviland, whom he married on April 27, 1946, in St. Patrick's Church. He also leaves two daughters, Ann M. Moorehouse of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Joan M. Courtney of Williamstown, and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services to celebrate the life of Harold E. "Hap" Haviland will take place Monday at 11 at the Williamstown Community Bible Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
Calling hours at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., are Sunday from 4 to 7. The family suggests donations in his memory to the Williamstown Community Bible Church or the Williamstown Village Ambulance, through the funeral home.
Survivors include two sons-in-law, George Moorehouse and Arthur Courtney; three grandchildren, Melissa, Jennifer and Brian Moorehouse, and two nephews, Thomas and William Gillooly. He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Gillooly.
