Virginia Ann "Gini" Sturtevant

Virginia Ann "Gini" Sturtevant, 61, of 139 Bridges Road died Tuesday at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.

A longtime educator, she had been active with and employed by several local groups for the learning disabled, including as a coordinator for Berkshire County Arc in Pittsfield.

Born in Worcester on Jan. 11, 1942, daughter of Frederick H. and Evelyn Agard Sturtevant, she attended schools in Shrewsbury. She earned a bachelor's degree in French literature and elementary education, and was certified in both elementary and secondary education by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

She also graduated summa cum laude with a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University, where she specialized in learning disabilities and vocational education.

Ms. Sturtevant was coordinator of academic services at the Community College of Vermont in Bennington at the time of her death. She had been director of evaluation and training programs with the Northern Berkshire Association for Retarded Citizens in North Adams. She also was employed at Southern Vermont College in Bennington and at Holyoke Community College as head coordinator for the learning disabilities program. In 1989, she was presented with an award by the Southern Vermont College student body for her outstanding dedication.

She previously taught French in the Shrewsbury schools for three years, and was French Club and class adviser. She also taught French and English at Easthampton Junior High School, where she served a year as co-chairman of the scholarship committee.

She was a member of the Council for the Handicapped in North Adams, the Association on Higher Education and Disability, and the National Education Association. An avid reader of classical literature, she was a writer and an activist for the environment and animals.

She sang with the Sweet Adelines and played the piano. She also enjoyed playing tennis, collecting stamps and postcards, and gardening.

She leaves three daughters, Kara Spezeski, with whom she made her home, Corinne "Cori" Spezeski of South Hadley and Deidre Spezeski-Nassar of Williamstown, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of Virginia Ann Sturtevant, who died Nov. 18, 2003, will be held Sunday at 2 on the campus of the Community College of Vermont at the Learning Center Building, Room 23, 324 Main St., Bennington, Vt.

Memorial donations are suggested for Amnesty International, Green Peace, Environmental Defense Fund or the charity of the donor's choice through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, which is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Nevin and Najla Nassar. She also leaves her companion, Norman D'Amico of Clarksburg.
