Elbert J. Winn, 89

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Elbert J. "Bud" Winn, 89, of 35 Adams Road, a former longtime resident of 322 North Hoosac Road, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in Williamstown on Dec. 21, 1913, son of Edward and Helen Murphy Winn, he attended Williamstown schools. After his family moved to North Adams, he attended Drury High School. He returned to Williamstown in 1938.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater.

Mr. Winn was employed for 25 years in the buildings and grounds department at Williams College, retiring as foreman in 1978. Earlier, he worked as a greenskeeper at Taconic Golf Club.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and a member of American Legion Richard A. Ruether Post 152.

He enjoyed playing golf.

His wife, the former Ruth J. Chase, whom he married May 6, 1945, died April 3, 1997.

He leaves a daughter, Patricia L. Winn of Dalton; four brothers, Chester Winn, Alfred J. Winn and John J. Winn, all of Williamstown, and Edward F. Winn of Bennington, Vt.; two sisters, Mary McMahon and Catherine Winn, both of Williamstown; three grandchildren, Robert R. Jasco Jr. of Hendersonville, Tenn., Risa L. Maynard of Stephentown, N.Y., and Traci Jo Winn of Bennington, Vt.; a great-grandchild, Joye T. Maynard of Stephentown, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A son, Elbert J. Winn Jr., died Oct. 4, 1988.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Winn will be celebrated tomorrow, Nov. 26, at 10 at St. Patrick's Church by the Rev. Mark J. Burke, S.J., pastor of St. Patrick's and St. Raphael's churches.

Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Williamstown Youth Center through AUGÉ-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
