Richard James Millard

Richard James Millard, 85, of 168 Thornliebank Road died Sunday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Nov. 24.
Born in Peabody on Oct. 3, 1918, son of James and Alice Turbett Millard, he attended schools in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1936.
He attended Boston College until entering the service, later returning to receive his bachelor's degree and, in 1950, his master's degree.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Saipan and was honorably discharged.
Mr. Millard was employed in the research and engineering department of the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. He also was the department head of the tantalum capacitor division. An authority on the use of tantalum, he was awarded 15 patents in tantalum capacitor development and production. He retired in 1983 with more then 30 years of service.
He was a communicant of the Parish of St. Patrick and St. Raphael. He was a member of the Sprague Electric Management and Quarter Century clubs, and the American Electrochemical Society.
He also served on the executive board of the former Sprague Electric Credit Union and was a volunteer with Elder Services of Berkshire County. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and automobiles.
His wife, the former Helen Ann Kozik, whom he married May 28, 1949, in St. John the Baptist Church in Salem, died Nov. 27, 1998
He leaves a daughter, Ann Reale of Mendham, N.J.; a sister, Ruth Powers of Beverly Farms, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Richard James Millard, who died Nov. 30, 2003, will be Thursday at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown, by the Rev. Mark Burke, pastor.
Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for North Adams Regional Hospital or Village Ambulance through the funeral home.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Katherine and Michael Reale; a son-in-law, Stephan Reale, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
