Dr. John William Peterson

Dr. John William Peterson, 85, of Sweetwood died yesterday morning at Sweet Brook Care Centers, where he had resided for three weeks.

Born in Duluth, Minn., on Dec. 21, 1917, son of Dr. Elmer G. Peterson and Elizabeth Johnson Peterson, he attended schools there. He earned his medical degree in 1943 from the University of Minnesota Medical School and did his internship at King's County Hospital in New York City.

He later trained as an ophthalmologist at the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago. He resided in Carbondale, Ill., until moving to Williamstown this year.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the Medical Corps in Cuba, Alaska, the Northwest Territories and London, caring for the wounded until being honorably discharged.

Dr. Peterson was an ophthalmologist for more than 35 years, most recently at Veteran's Hospital in Marion, Ill., from which he retired from full-time practice. He had first practiced at Holden Hospital and later at Doctor's Memorial Hospital, both in Carbondale.

He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and enjoyed camping on the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota.

He also enjoyed basketball, horseback riding and fishing.

He and his wife, the former Alvina Pederson, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 22.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Roger Peterson of Cedarburg, Wis., Dr. James Peterson of Adams and Charles Peterson of Simsbury, Conn.; two daughters, Karn Rosenburg of Cheshire, and Joan Brownlee of Montclair, Va., 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services and burial for Dr. John William Peterson, who died Dec. 6, 2003, will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to North Adams Regional Hospital in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-laws, Roger and Janis Peterson of Cedarburg, Wis., Dr. James Peterson and Gail Peterson of Adams, and Charles and Corinne Peterson of Simsbury, Conn.; and two daughters and a son-in-law, Karn Rosenburg of Cheshire, and Joan and Don Brownlee of Montclair, Va. A sister, Elizabeth Silliman, is deceased.
